My Say:
The first days of Autumn. ....
The Sun rises noticably later and sets sooner than we want. Fall Fair season has begun, the tobacco stalks are picked clean, and squash is in season. Farmers hereabouts seem pretty happy.
It has been a good Summer so we won't complain. No drought. No endless days of grey skies and rain. A nice mix of sunny warm days interspersed with enough rain to keep it green and healthy. Is that what they mean by Global Warming and Green Shift?? That doesn't seem so bad to me.
Our indoor ring has new lighting and the insulation is going up to prepare for winter. And we have added outdoor ring lighting to extend the season when the weather is favourable.
When Thanksgiving comes, I think we will continue to have reasons to give thanks.

Papa.

Ch-hair-ish

Cherish was diagnosed with canine Addison's disease at the age of 3. She lost a lot of her coat while we sought a diagnosis and stabilized her medications.  Five years later, her coat was still thin and she struggled with skin irritations that only aggravated matters.
Earlier this year, we learned of a topical treatment specific to dogs with Addison's disease and S.A. It is an essential oil that is massaged into the coat and skin at regular intervals. We have observed a significant improvement in Cherish's coat since beginning treatment.
We purchased the product and directions for it's use from Sheree Stone Melancon in Texas.  She operates a company specializing in soap and canine spa paw products. Sheree is a licensed Canine Massage Therapist offering therapy for the Sport Dog or the couch potato.

If you would like more information about the treatment, or contact information for Sheree, please contact Debby via email.

Yazoo Master Mower YR-60

Our latest aquisition to the grounds team is a vintage 70's Yazoo 60" Master Mower. When it arrived it needed a bit of TLC. The blade drive belt would disengage when it ran off the drive pulley, the carb would run out of fuel after 20 minutes of mowing and the mower deck had holes big enough for the rabbits to jump through. But it had a reliable Wisconsin air-cooled twin, sharp blades and good rubber.
And it is FAST!
We've done some work already to fix the belts and fuel system, and this winter it will get a cosmetic makeover.
It joins the rest of Team REDux: our Ferguson tractor, Honda walk-behind mower and Homelite string trimmer. All red, all brought back to life.

The Tractor:
Our little workhorse is a 1953 Ferguson TEA 20-85.
Chosen for its little 4 cylinder carbureted gasoline engine that would be easily coaxed to life even in the coldest winter weather, solid cast iron backbone, genuine tractor tires that come chest-high, and simple enough to be maintained and repaired  right on the farm. It spends the winter with a rear blade for snow clearing duty, and a set of forks for moving things about in the summer.

JOAT
I was confused one day when I received an e-mail from my sister saying that "with your JOAT skills  it shouldn't be a problem." For two days I scratched my head wondering what JOAT was. She hadn't mentioned any seminars or courses that she might have attended lately, like SMART goal-setting or any of the other acronym-driven buzzword-bingo employee-empowerment programs that so many attend and so few implement. Nor did I think it was a typo or anything to do with goats since I don't work with goats. So what was JOAT ....
Then it hit me.
Jack Of All Trades. JOAT.
I have become an Acronym. And here I thought I was an Anachronism.
The problem with specializing is complexity. The deeper you look into something, the more complex it becomes. To keep the complexity within reason, you narrow your focus. In a few years you are so focussed you are staring at a point of light and fail to see the locomotive to which the light is attached.
I'd rather be a generalist thanks. A locomotive is far more complex and interesting than a point of light. More dangerous too.

NASCAR
What kind of redneck poodle-owner would I be if I didn't like good ol' stock car racing.
Funny thing is, the Poodles like NASCAR too.
We are past FOX and into TNT coverage. Which brings Kyle and Wally onto the coverage team. Which is a Good thing.
Cheer for,
The 9 car of Kasey Kahne
J. Pablo Montoya in the Havoline 42
and Kyle Busch in the 18

Top 5 Neat Non-power Tools
These are little things around the shop that make making things so much easier.
  1. 2-in-1 staple gun. Handy little thing that shoots conventional T-50 staples and also handles 1/2" and 5/8" brad nails. Super-handy.
  2. 6" metal shear. A Christmas present, its a bench tool for shearing small metal stock that is faster, cleaner and quieter than using the chop saw. A Princess Auto gem.
  3. Ear defenders and full-face visor. Well, thats two things but they keep me safe and that makes them neat. Another Princess Auto gem.
  4. 8" 4-ton press brake. I made it myself, it sits on the bench and does is great at bending rod and flat stock  quickly and precisely.
  5. Welding magnets. Ideal for holding things in place when you can't use a clamp. Princess Auto again ....

Elk Velvet Antler

We use EVA as a natural-alternative to medication in treating for arthritis, muscle strain and pain, joint ailments and other heath problems associated with older dogs.

In the velvet stage, the antlers are very porous and have little or no calcification. At this point, the antler is full of compounds that are beneficial to pets. Observed benefits include improved mobility, improved recovery from sport-related injury and an overall improved quality of life.

The Jeeps:

Debby and I have been tried and true Jeep owners for quite a while now.
Currently we are the happy owners of two Jeep Grand Cherokees. One is a 1995 model purchased new, the second is a 1998 model purchased as a lease return. Now we have a 3rd for parts and a 4th on the way. Gas may be getting pricey, but so are new cars and associated costs. Not sure when it will pay to ditch the gas guzzler SUVs, but by then a horse and buggy might be 'trendy' or a Stanley-steameresque return to wood-burning transportation.

Addison's Disease
Canine Addison's
At 3 years of age Cherish was diagnosed with Addison's Disease. With special care and guidance from her Mom, Cherish has continued to compete in agility, obedience, rally, field training and now has begun freestyle. The year 2007 saw significant accomplishments as Cherish earned her Bronze in AAC, her AGI and placed 6th at the AAC Regionals. Cherish will be celebrating her 9th birthday in April 2008.
There are many resources on the Internet that help in recognizing the symptoms, and developing a stable treatment regime after a diagnosis of Addison's has been confirmed by your Vet.

Bibliography
I do read a lot. Amazing what you can learn from an honest-to-God bound paper & ink book. And it doesn't have to be non-fiction to be educational.
Random-sampling of hardcovers on my shelf in chronological order of publication:
  • A Textbook on Mining Engineering.  The Colliery Engineering Company, 1899
  • Robt. Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island.  Current Literature Publishing Co., 1910.
  • A Handbook of Wood Pipe Practice.  National Tank & Pipe Co., 1938.
  • Ned H. Roberts, The Muzzle-Loading Cap Lock Rifle.  The Stackpole Company, 1952.
  • Maurice J. Zucrow, Principles of Jet-Propulsion and Gas Turbines.  John Wiley & Sons, 1957.
  • Henry Greenly, Walschaerts' Valve Gear.  Argus Books Ltd., 1977.
  • Ben Bova, Privateers.  TOR Books, 1985.
  • Forrest M. Mims III, Basic Semiconductor Circuits.  Tandy Corp., 1986.
  • Sun Tzu translated by Thomas Cleary, The Art of War.  Shambhala Publications Inc., 1988
  • Douglas Adams, Mostly Harmless.  Wm. Heinemann Ltd, 1992.
Lots of softcover SF packed away. Someday I'll pull it out and it will seem fresh again.

Old Skool is New Again

The Industrial Revolution is about to Re-Volt.
When push comes to shove, electricity is a very efficient form of transmitting energy from creator to consumer. However with large scale generation comes the issue of optics. Whether hydroelectric, nuclear, hydrocarbon-fired, wind or solar -- large scale power projects bring large scale environmental concerns.
Its not just the generation plant that faces opposition, its also the creation of source material (mines, resevoirs, wind farms) and the creation/expansion of power transmission corridors that face opposition.

Sometimes, as they say in NASCAR, you have to slow down to go faster. So lets back it down and Think Local to Act Global.

That is not to say that burning 'stuff' on an individual basis is a good thing. It is not. Proper control of combustion and combustion by-products is only practical on a scale somewhat above the backyard level.
But if you and your neighbours have automobiles that are hydrocarbon-electric hybrids, it makes sense that you find the means to generate the electric portion on a local level. Food for thought.
